The
Department offers opportunities for postgraduate study by both research
and coursework. Much of our research involves collaboration with
outside
bodies including DERA (now QinetiQ), GKN-Westland
Helicopters, BAE
SYSTEMS, US Army and CAA. Sponsorship for home
students
is often available for PhD level research at Glasgow and help with
obtaining
scholarships for postgraduate study is often available. In addition, we
are the lead organisation for a unique international masters programme
in aerospace engineering. The course features modules given at partner
institutions in the US such as Stanford, North Carolina and Colorado,
and
at EU institutions such as Torino and Munich.

Postgraduate
degrees by research can be obtained, typically after 2 years (MSc)
or 3 years (PhD) study. These degrees are awarded on the basis of an
examined
thesis containing a contribution to learning. The Department currently
has active research groups in Computational
Fluid Dynamics, Experimental
Low Speed Aerodynamics, Flight
Dynamics, Space
Systems, Air
Traffic Management & Avionics, and Aircraft
Design & Structures.

further information contact: Dr G.Radice or the
member of staff in the area of interest.
The International
Masters Programme includes a selection of taught and project based
modules (research only at Glasgow) delivered within the International
partner
group of universities. The course will prepare graduates for future
careers
within the international aerospace industry - more information can be
found
at: http://www.colorado.edu/ASEN/IMS
For
further information contact: Dr.
Ladislav Smrcek.
The Diploma
in Aerospace Engineering requires 9 months of full time study in
taught
courses and project work. A range of options similar to those offered
for
the final year undergraduate degrees is normally available. Information
can be obtained here.

Funding
for postgraduate study is available from a number of sources. First,
University
and Faculty Scholarships may be available for PhD study, comprising the
tuition fee plus a stipend. Second, outside agencies such as QinetiQ
may
from time-to-time make funding available to support research on a
specific
topic with a particular member of staff. Third, research assistantships
are sometimes available where a research grant or contract supports a
salaried
research position. Finally, self-sponsoring is an option.
